How to Get an Online Medical Marijuana Card in Oklahoma

Written by Erick Kaufman | Jun 29, 2020 5:00:00 AM

On June 26, 2018, life in Oklahoma changed. Oklahoma residents voted to legalize medical marijuana, opening up all kinds of new medical avenues and economical opportunities.

If you’re someone who has suffered from chronic pain or anxiety, you’d do just about anything to find relief. Medical marijuana has proven itself to be an effective solution for many ailments. But legalization does not mean you can pick up a bag of cannabis at the local gas station.

You need a medical marijuana card. Keep reading to learn the steps to obtaining an online medical marijuana card.

Steps to Obtaining an Online Medical Marijuana Card

Oklahoma has streamlined the process to get a medical marijuana card online in Oklahoma. You still need basic qualifications for a card, such as a doctor’s recommendation, proof of residency, and proof of your identity.

The state government clearly understands in our day and age the benefits of obtaining a card online. If you’re already fighting severe symptoms that lead you to medical marijuana, you need to have as simple a process as possible.

Step 1: See a Doctor

Doctors cannot legally prescribe marijuana. They can, however, recommend it. A doctor is the first step in how to get medical marijuana.

The FDA uses the term “prescribe” as a legal term. Since marijuana is not approved by the FDA, a doctor cannot legally prescribe marijuana.

To work their way around the legality of the term “prescribe,” doctors can recommend cannabis use for their patients who have certain health conditions. Oklahoma medical card doctors in particular understand the importance of recommendations versus prescriptions.

So, if you believe marijuana will help you with your health condition, you need to first find a doctor willing to recommend marijuana. With science continually proving the benefits of marijuana, more doctors are willing to recommend it than you might think.

Come to your visit prepared. You should have past prescriptions and your health records on hand so the doctor can fully evaluate your condition.

If the doctor determines you have a condition that qualifies you for marijuana use, they will fill out a state-provided form that goes with your online application. The form will include information like dosages, the period for which you qualify for medical marijuana, and the consumption methods the doctor recommends for marijuana.

This first document is key to receiving your online MMJ card in any state not just in Oklahoma.

Do You Have a Qualifying Condition?

A doctor will recommend marijuana if you have a qualifying condition. In most states, these conditions are spelled out specifically. Oklahoma does not have this requirement, though.

The Oklahoma medical marijuana program does not specify what condition you must have to qualify for a medical marijuana card. Your doctor will determine if they believe marijuana can help your condition.

Medical marijuana patients often suffer from one or more of the following conditions:

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Muscle pain

  • Migraines

  • Inflammation

  • Depression

  • Appetite loss

  • Body aches

  • Nausea

Marijuana has proven to alleviate many of these symptoms and provide relief to countless individuals. If you suffer from any of these conditions, document them, and bring the documentation with you to your doctor’s appointment.

Step Two: Apply For an Online Medical Marijuana Card

The card itself is not an online card, but you should apply online for your MMJ card. Oklahoma has made this process simple and streamlined.

Before you apply, gather the proper documentation. You’ll need the following documents:

  • Proof of Identity: You need a document or card that proves you are who you say you are. This includes a driver’s license, an Oklahoma identification card, a passport issued by the U.S. government, or a tribal identification card.

  • Proof of Residency: You need to prove that you’re an Oklahoma resident. You should have a front and back copy of your Oklahoma driver’s license or identification card. You can also use a voter identification card, a utility bill for the month before your date of application, a residential property deed to a property in Oklahoma, or a current rental agreement for a property in Oklahoma. Your utility bill cannot be a cell phone or internet bill.

  • A Photo: You need a clear, color, full-face digital photograph.

  • Physician Recommendation Form: You need your Adult Patient Physician Recommendation form the doctor filled out for you. It needs to be dated within 30 days of applying for your MMJ card. Make sure your doctor filled this out completely because if anything is missing, your application will be rejected.

  • Medicaid or Medicare Insurance: You need to include your Medicaid or Medicare insurance card or enrollment documentation.

Once you have your documentation ready, go to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority application page. Here you’ll fill out basic information.

You will have to pay the standard application fee of $100. If you have Medicare or Medicaid insurance, you must pay the reduced fee of $20. Your MMJ card will last you two years, and you must pay the application fee only once during that time period.

Step Three: Wait

Your doctor’s recommendation for marijuana usage does not mean you’ll receive your marijuana right away. You still have to wait for the paperwork to process.

Typically you will hear back from the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana association within two weeks. Sending in your application does not guarantee you will receive an MMJ card. So whether you receive a card or not, the OMMA should contact you within 14 days.

Once you receive your MMJ card, it is valid for two years. You do not have to go through this process again until the card expires.

Finding a Dispensary

You cannot get your marijuana from a local PVC or another well-known pharmacy. You now need to find a reliable dispensary with high-quality cannabis.

As of January 2020, Oklahoma had more dispensaries than any other state in the nation. It also had the second-most dispensaries per capita of all the states in the United States. So actually finding a dispensary isn’t as hard as you’d think.

Research the dispensary like you’d research any store that you’re going to visit. See what other customers have said online about their product. Look in particular for reviews about the overall store atmosphere, the knowledge of the employees, and the quality of the products.
