Can a Minor Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online in Oklahoma?

Medical marijuana has been legal in Oklahoma since 2018. Because of how new and revolutionary this change was for the state, there’s a good chance that many people are confused about how to actually register for a medical marijuana card. This is especially true for parents and legal guardians of children and teenagers who qualify for and would benefit from medical marijuana.

Thankfully, it’s actually a fairly straightforward process. And your minor can even get their medical marijuana card online! So continue reading and we’ll take you through everything you’ll want to know.

What Is a Medical Marijuana License for Minor Patients?

A person who is under the age of 18 can legally use, grow, and possess medical marijuana and related products in Oklahoma if they have a minor patient license for medical marijuana. This license is acquired by getting two doctor recommendations. Also, a parent or legal guardian will have to submit an online form to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA).

On this card, you’ll be able to find:

  • the name of the patient

  • their date of birth

  • the county and city that they live in

  • license expiration date

  • patient’s photo

  • type of license

  • a unique medical marijuana license number

Medical marijuana cards for minors are valid until the patient turns 18 or for two years, whichever comes first.

Caregiver Medical Marijuana Licenses for Minors

A parent or legal guardian can obtain a caregiver license. In order to receive this license, the minor will first need to get recommendations from two doctors for medical marijuana.

Each doctor will have to fill out a different form and both of those forms will have to be included in the online application. Both of those forms will also have to be dated within one month of each other. Also, the medical marijuana card will need to be applied for no later than one month after the issue date of the second form.

Short-Term Licenses

Recently, the OMMA has been issuing a new, short-term license. This is a medical marijuana patient license that lasts for two months. In order to get this license, a patient will have to provide a 60-day doctor recommendation form and select that license type.

Booking An Appointment With a Doctor

If you’re looking for an experienced and knowledgable doctor to give your minor a recommendation, then you can schedule an appointment at one of our three Oklahoma locations. Our doctors will go over the patient’s health concerns with attentiveness and care and answer any questions that they might have about medical marijuana treatment.

They will also be able to tell the patient if medical marijuana is the best option for their specific ailment.

What You’ll Need

In order to successfully obtain your online medical marijuana card, you’ll need to bring proof of Oklahoma residency and also proof of identity. Examples of proof include a driver’s license or a state-issued ID.

Application Fee

The cost to submit an application online is $100. However, it only costs $20 if the minor patient can provide valid proof of Medicare or Medicaid enrollment. There’s also an additional credit card processing fee that takes place during the transaction.

It should also be noted that payments aren’t refundable and you can’t be refunded if your application isn’t approved.

It’s worth pointing out that the cost for a short-term license is the same as the cost for a two-year license.

After the Application

After the application has been submitted, the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority will review it. If it’s completed properly and meets all of the requirements, then the applicant will get an approval letter as well as the minor’s identification card within two weeks of whenever the application was submitted.

If you submit an incomplete application (because of unclear or missing documents or information), then you’ll get an email telling you the reasons why your application is incomplete. You’ll then have the chance to log into your account and make corrections. The submission date is the date when the application is completed.

If your application is denied because you didn’t meet the necessary requirements, then you’ll get a denial letter that tells you the reasons you were denied within two weeks of when your application was submitted.

Once the Minor Patient Has Their Card

The minor’s medical marijuana card will be needed whenever that patient and their guardian purchases and transports any medical marijuana products.

When medical cannabis is bought at a dispensary, or when cannabis is taken to a processor to be put into a concentrate, the minor patient and their legal guardian or parent will have to show the medical marijuana card. They’ll also have to show some other form of identification as well.

The Importance of Knowing About How a Minor Can Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online

As more studies are done on the benefits of medical marijuana, and it continues to become legalized around the world, we’re now starting to see just how powerful and useful medical marijuana can be to patients with certain ailments. Medical marijuana can be an effective and safe option where other medications don’t work as well, including for children and teens.
