Before you book a telemedicine consultation with one of our licensed physicians, you need to understand what telehealth means, how it works at Doctors of Cannabis, and what you are agreeing to when you consent. This document covers all of that in plain language.
By scheduling a telehealth appointment through Doctors of Cannabis, you are giving your informed consent to the telehealth evaluation described in this document. If you have questions before you book, contact us at legal@docsofcannabis.com.
What Is Telehealth?
Telehealth - also called telemedicine - means seeing a doctor without being in the same room. Instead of driving to a clinic and sitting in a waiting room, you connect with a licensed physician through a secure phone or video call from wherever you are. The doctor can ask you questions, review your information, and make a professional medical recommendation - all remotely.
Not every state allows telehealth for medical marijuana evaluations. Some states require an in-person visit for new patients and only allow telehealth for renewals. Others allow it for everything. We only offer telehealth consultations in states where it is legally permitted for your specific situation.
How Your Consultation Works
Here is exactly what happens when you book a telehealth evaluation with Doctors of Cannabis, so there are no surprises:
1. You Register and Book
You create an account on our platform and select an available appointment time. Scheduling is available seven days a week. You will choose either a phone or video consultation based on your preference and what your state allows.
2. You Upload Your Information
Before your appointment, you will have the option to upload any relevant medical records or history. This is optional - the physician will ask you about your medical background during the consultation regardless. Having records available simply helps the doctor get a fuller picture.
3. You Connect With Your Doctor
At your scheduled time, you will be connected with a board-certified physician who is licensed in your state. The consultation typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes. The doctor will ask you about your symptoms, your medical history, and the conditions for which you are seeking a recommendation.
4. The Doctor Makes Their Decision
Based on your conversation and your information, the physician will make an independent professional decision about whether to issue a medical marijuana recommendation. You will not be pressured, and you will not be charged if the doctor does not approve you.
5. You Receive Your Result
If approved, your medical marijuana recommendation will be delivered to you as a digital PDF immediately after the consultation. This document is stored securely in your patient portal and can be accessed at any time.
If you select a video consultation and experience a technical issue - such as a dropped connection or a problem with your camera - the doctor may switch to a phone call to complete your evaluation. This does not change the nature or validity of your consultation.
What You Are Consenting To
By agreeing to a telehealth consultation with Doctors of Cannabis, you are giving your informed consent to the following:
- A remote medical evaluation conducted by a licensed physician via phone or video in place of an in-person visit.
- The collection and review of your personal and medical information by the physician during the consultation, including any records you upload beforehand.
- The secure storage of your consultation and recommendation records on our platform and on Heally, our telemedicine technology partner, in accordance with HIPAA.
- The possibility that your consultation may be conducted by phone if video is unavailable or if a technical issue occurs during a video session.
- The physician's independent authority to approve or decline your medical marijuana recommendation based on their professional judgment.
The Limitations of Telehealth
Telehealth is convenient, but it is not the same as an in-person visit. There are things a doctor can do face-to-face that they cannot do remotely. By consenting to telehealth, you acknowledge the following limitations:
- The physician cannot perform a physical examination during a telehealth visit.
- Certain conditions or situations may require an in-person evaluation before a recommendation can be made. If that is the case, your doctor will let you know.
- Technical issues—such as poor audio, dropped connections, or video failure—may affect the quality of the consultation.
- A telehealth consultation is not appropriate in a medical emergency. If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911 immediately.
Your Rights During the Consultation
You have the right to make informed decisions throughout this process. That means:
- You can ask your doctor questions at any time during the consultation.
- You can choose to end the consultation at any point if you feel uncomfortable.
- You are not obligated to accept a recommendation if one is offered – the decision to pursue medical cannabis is yours.
- You have the right to know who your doctor is, including their name and license information, before or during the consultation.
- You can request a different physician if you prefer, subject to availability in your state.
How Your Information Is Protected
Everything that happens during your telehealth consultation is private and handled under HIPAA. Here is what that means in practice:
- Your consultation is conducted over a secure, encrypted connection.
- Only the physician you are speaking with has access to the details of your evaluation.
- Your medical records and recommendation are stored securely on our platform and on Heally, our HIPAA-compliant telemedicine partner.
- We do not share your consultation details with employers, insurance companies, or anyone else without your explicit permission.
- You can access your records at any time through your patient portal.
Your telehealth consultation establishes a valid doctor-patient relationship. This is a real medical evaluation conducted by a real licensed physician - not a rubber stamp or a formality.
State-Specific Requirements
Telehealth rules are different in every state. Some states allow video or phone consultations for new patients seeking their first medical marijuana card. Other states only allow telehealth for patients who are renewing an existing card. A few states do not permit telehealth for medical marijuana evaluations at all.
Before you book, we will confirm that telehealth is available for your situation in your state. If it is not, we will let you know your options - which may include waiting for a policy change or exploring whether in-person options exist in your area.
We will never schedule you for a telehealth consultation in a state where it is not legally permitted for your situation. If there is any question about eligibility, we will clarify before you pay or book.
What Happens After Your Consultation
Once your evaluation is complete, here is what comes next depending on your outcome:
If You Are Approved
Your physician will issue a medical marijuana recommendation, which will be delivered to you as a digital PDF in your patient portal. If you purchased our application assistance service, our team will take that recommendation and begin the process of submitting your application to your state on your behalf.
If You Are Not Approved
If the physician determines that medical cannabis is not appropriate for you at this time, you will not be charged for the evaluation. The doctor may be able to explain what conditions or circumstances might change that determination in the future, but the decision itself is final and we will not appeal it on your behalf.
Renewals
If you are a returning patient whose card has expired or is about to expire, we can schedule a renewal evaluation through the same telehealth process. Heally tracks your renewal date and will send you reminders starting 90 days before your card expires so you never have a gap in coverage.
Changes to This Consent
We may update this Consent to Telehealth from time to time as laws or our services change. If we make updates, we will post the revised version on our website with a new effective date. If you book a new consultation after changes have been made, you will be consenting to the updated terms.
